BARBARO.....

132nd Kentucky Derby Winner!!!

God Speed Big boy!

May you be running in greener pastures.

You have touched so many lives including mine, I like others am richer for walking in your presence.

This photojournal is of Barbaro as he valiantly fought for his life at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center. That I'm hoping to expand it into a book as there are so many great photos never seen and great stories to be told.

It was an honor to photograph him.

He struggled with grace and courage that we would all be lucky to have in the same circumstances.

I will forever be in awe of him.

He was a true champion.

Barbaro is lifted out of a raft device from a pool where he is gently woken up after surgery.

After recovering from surgery Barbaro, a little groggy is lead by his surgeon, Dr. Dean Richardson to his stall in ICU.

Barbaro nibbles on some Alfafa after coming out of a successful surgery that took over 5 hours to repair his leg.

Edgar Prado, Barbaro's jockey greets him for the first time after his injury at the Preakness with a kiss.Edgar told me that "Big B" ( as I like to call him as he is larger life) will probably be the best ride of his life.

Flowers, cards and baskets full of apples and carrots adorn his stall in ICU. Peppermints and baby carrots are his favourite, with an occasional stud mufin

Dr.Joan Hendricks, Dean of the Vet school scratches Big B's favourite spot. B can tell she loves animals. Horses are sensitive that way.

Dr. Emma Adam checks out Barbaro on her morning rounds. He knows the routine and waits patiently after a few nips to let her know just who's boss.

Michael Matz, Barbaro's trainer visits him everyday. Big B has a special bond with him too. Almost like father and son, he likes to test Matz to see what he can get away with and then nuzzles Matz afterwards. Being an olympic equestrian, Matz has been around horses his whole life, not much gets past him. Its interesting to watch the dynamics at play.

Big B gets a kiss from one of his nurses, Jamie. The nurses spend so much time with him they are like family. Plus he loves women, equine as well as human, he's a real stud!

Back to grazing, just as God intended.

Me shooting "Big B" (photos taken by Jennifer Rench)

He reminds me of the Dali Llama- he has a young heart, and an old soul

He was never keen coming off the grass

Me with Big B! He was lord of his stall. And he let you know it..I'm telling him to put his ears up for the photo and not to nip me. He is so smart he practically does it on command. B' loves cameras. He's such a poser!

Barbaro, Dr. Dean, and Me - New Year's eve 2006.. It was the first time after my riding injury i had seen him,I was so excited ( u can see the edge of the brace under my shirt) I told B he had been an inspiration to me,as I was healing and that I had screws and rods too just like him..... After licking my camera I think he remembered me.

They look like soulmates to me.

Big B and Dr. Dean Richardson right before New Year's 2007 - his broken leg had healed and we thought he would be heading to Kentucky to rehab.
